Studio Visits by Chih-Tung Lin is an ongoing performative-curatorial project where Lin visits participants who signed up for a visit in the role of a curator and performs a series of actions during the visit. Initiated in 2020 as Lin's master thesis project at University of the Arts Helsinki, the project has toured around in Finland and abroad, reaching creative workers internationally. As a result of the project, a graphic novel which documents the process of the project is published in 2024.

Subject: Studio Visit by Chih Tung Lin
Dear participant,
You are invited to book a studio visit with Chih Tung Lin.
Please reply including your contact information and the location of your studio or other preferred space to meet. After signing up, you will receive a confirmation letter with more details attached.
There are various ways to study about the relationships between an artist and a curator. I cherish the fruitful exchange a studio visit potentially enables. As a curatorial student, I decide to learn more about studio visits by doing it myself.
I do not want to visit empty-handed. Thus, I thought to provide you a massage on the sore spot that troubles you within your studio practice. After the service, you could share with me about your current projects, your artistic practice or anything you like.
.The service is not limited to a real massage. There is room for negotiation.
.The visit is expected to last less than 1.5 hours.
Regards,
Chih Tung Lin
The graphic novel titled Studio Visits by Chih-Tung Lin follows the completion of Chih-Tung's master thesis project at University of the Arts Helsinki during which 19 distinctive studio visits with Finnish-based art workers were realised. Drawing the comics, Chih-Tung went about my thoughts on the curator’s role, the studio visit culture, conventions, power structure, and many other curator-artist related subjects. As a result, Studio Visits by Chih-Tung Lin takes the shape of a two-coloured riso-printed, slightly smaller than A5 comic book. With its layout designed by Valentina Černiauskaitė, the book of 116 pages includes a compilation of the comic strips documenting a beginning curator’s constant questioning on their role and their relationship with whom they work with.
With this project, Chih-Tung wishes to share my firsthand observation and reflection on running the project but also all the wandering thoughts that the project inspired them of through their comical narratives. The book had its first appearance at Papers and Peers book fair in Bangkok, represented by Break Off art book fair from Taichung, Taiwan.
The project is supported by Grafia_ry and The Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike).
